GAME PLAN PROGRAM

Our Game Plan program is dedicated to helping disadvantaged youth with strong academic promise to succeed academically and in life.

The Game Plan program’s mission is to provide structure and resources for Los Angeles students, ages 15 – 24, to realize their full potential through a college education. The Game Plan program is mentoring these students so they can become tomorrow’s leaders. Many of our students come from single-parent, low-income, immigrant and refugee families. All are first generation college entrants and many are first generation high school graduates. We match each of our students with a volunteer adult mentor who provides them with a powerful example of the professional and social opportunities available through a college education. A consistent relationship with the same mentor is a significant factor in the success of our students.

The primary goal of this program is to change the lives of youth in our community through education. According to the Editorial Projects in Education (EPE) Research Center, the U.S. high school graduation rate has risen for yet another year, to a new all-time high of 84.6 percent. As some celebrated the steady gains in high school completion, others worried that the pace of improvement is slowing, and that the numbers tell a false story. Recent figures by the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics show that 84.6% of the students in the class of 2016-17 earned diplomas in four years. That’s a half-point better than in 2015-16, when the graduation rate was 84.1 percent. City of Youth ensures our students are supported in receiving their High School diplomas while encouraging furthering education through college enrollment. We work with community organizations and programs to assist students who, without an organization like ours, would not have the opportunity to go to college or have a bright future.
